I Joined Twitter
I joined twitter last night and it is really a very, very abbreviated Myspace and in real-time. Not much to explore. I think you have to know who or what you are looking for. Another thing I noticed is that people can comment from anywhere because you can link your phone to it, so you can be on your way to the airport, etc. If you plan to use it professionally, you definitely do want to watch your comments. I was very excited to see LeVar Burton on there, I just love Reading Rainbow; however, I believe he's moved on.

I think it's pretty cool that some of you in the class have "jumped ahead" and begun exploring some of the micro blogging tools, which we'll explore later.
ReplyDeleteTwitter has definitely become mainstream since the election, which can be a good or bad thing depending on how you use Twitter. Perhaps more on that in a future Thing.
Yes, Twitter is quite mobile, and because it has been around for so long, there are SO many free apps (applications) that have been designed specifically for Twitter that it isn't funny.
On Twitter, making use of it completely depends on several factors A)What do you want out of it? B) Who are you following? C) How many do you follow? D)How many are following you? IF you're alone on Twitter - there's little use for it. To get a return on Twitter, you have to "Follow" people who can "tweet" the information that you're looking for. In turn, if you want answers, you need to build a network on Twitter so that when you ask a question, you'll get an answer.
Many give up on Twitter or other micro-blogging communities before actually letting it grow legs - myself included. However, once I gave it another try and committed to building a network, I started to see the benefits of it as a professional resource.
I'm cobannon on Twitter if you'd like to follow me. I tend to cross-post from another micro-blogging community though (called Plurk) because I'm more active there and the conversation are better. Again, we'll get into these communities in more depth in a later "Thing."
